2009 Flag Day

Derby Elks Lodge #571 held its annual Flag Day Ceremony on June 14th at 11am on Derby’s Birmingham Green.  Color guards from the Police Dept and Derby Scouts were on hand as a small crowd gathered to hear the history of Flag Day.  In 1907, the BPO Elks Grand Lodge designated by resolution June 14 as Flag Day. The Grand Lodge of the Order adopted mandatory observance of the occasion by every Lodge in 1911, and that requirement continues.  During this year’s ceremony First Lt. Thomas J. Brown was recognized for his bravery in the line of duty while serving in Iraq.  Brown who grew up in Shelton was killed in Iraq after the patrol he was leading came under small arms fire.

His Mother Carol Brown was on hand to receive the Medal of Valor on his behalf from the Derby Elks. The Medal of Valor is presented to deserving families of those who have made the supreme sacrifice in the Iraqi conflict.  Pictured here are Veterans Erwin “Gus” Williams from Derby on the left and Veteran and former Ansonia Mayor William Menna on the right looking on as Mrs. Brown is escorted back to her seat by Elk Esquire Lucy Birdsell after receiving the medal on her son’s behalf.
